Psst... a little note from your Secret Baker...

Hey Secret Friends!

My name is Laura Ivitza, and I'm so glad you came to my site!

I grew up with food being something that brought family members together. Taking moments out of our day to sit, give thanks and connect with those we love was very important. My passion for baking started at a very young age, watching the women of my family cook and bake amazing things for the family to enjoy. There has always been so much love even in preparing a meal together. I learned that whether it’s making a meal or a sweet treat for your loved ones, it’s a way of letting them know you love them and that you care for them – and it’s extra special if the ingredients come from local soil.

After working in a bakery part time during high school I moved onto a gap year working in a restaurant. Once I got a taste of the industry (despite all it's hardships) I decided to head to George Brown for Baking and Pastry Arts Management and graduated in 2012 - I’ve been working in the industry ever since!

Recently a little seed started to grow … my husband and I had just moved into a cute little neighborhood in a corner down by the bluffs. We closed the sale on our house the same day the Pandemic restrictions set in. I wanted to bake to keep busy, and feed my family and that’s all it was. Until I started to meet all my amazing neighbours! Growing up Mennonite, it has always been the norm to make a big batch of food and share it with friends, family, neighbors and even just acquaintances. Word of mouth spread and the batches of baked goods for my family grew to spread warmth and joy throughout the neighbourhood. I never intended it to be a business and therefore it was a Clandestine operation - hence the name Secret Baker! It still is somewhat "secret" but I'd love to delight you with my bakes more for connection and therapy than anything (and to support my young family a little along the way). So please ask me for your faves, check out my weekly menus, and try some of the goods.

Hope you enjoy,

Small Batch Baking

After a few of life’s trials, I have been given a unique opportunity to ground my self again, and rekindle that fire that started it all. I truly believe there is a connection between working with your hands and mental health. This little venture is purely therapeutic and experimental at this point. It is small batch and I knead or whisk my work by hand – there’s no machinery involved (other than using my stand mixer when necessary). I love baking with intention and use fresh local ingredients as much as I can – this reflects in price and quality. I release new limited specials weekly based on family recipes, seasonality, special occasions, requests and pure creative whim. As well, I have a base menu available at anytime and is a few of my own faves and top sellers available for pick up in Scarborough with 24 hours notice. If you are looking for something outside of my weekly menu and would like to chat about a custom order – please give me a shout!
